Opening Ceremony

An Historic Day

February 3rd 2022 will be remembered as a momentous day when our first Christian School for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students was opened in the Tweed district. The opening ceremony for Pacific Gulgangali Jarjums Christian School was led by members of the Tweed Advisory Committee and local elders who have been instrumental in turning the original idea for a school into reality.

The Welcome

The welcome, with its smoking ceremony and traditional dance, was presented by local Cultural Advisor Kyle Slabb and the Banaam Dancers. Local elders spoke of the importance of this School and explained that 'Gulgangali Jarjums' means 'kids moving forward', and highlighted the design of the School’s logo by celebrated Bundjalung artist and graphic designer Christine Slabb.

The biggest smiles and loudest laughter came from the 10 students who form the inaugural class. The happy faces of their parents added to what was an emotive event.
